Music and the appreciation of interior aesthetics of the design studio
Abstract
Sounds are persistent in the built environment and affect the aesthetics experience of its visual qualities. Both outdoor and indoor spaces have different levels of sonic effects that need to be examined to arrive at better aesthetical qualities. Students of interior design spends long time working in their studios and normally listen to music during their work. There is a need to investigate the effect of music on students’ appreciation of the interior design aesthetics of their studios and how it can be used to support interior design education. This research studied the effect of music on interior design students’ appreciation of the aesthetics of their studio. The students were asked to evaluate several aesthetics qualities of their design studio while they listened to different types of music. It was found that the different music types affected differently the students’ aesthetical appreciation of the studio’s interior design. This highlights the need to give more attention to both music and the interior design of the studio to establishing for more creative design education.
